Snow Coloring Tutorial - Day 10 of 30 Days of Coloring Techniques

Snow Coloring Tutorial - Day 10 of 30 Days of Coloring Techniques

Have you ever wondered what a fast way to do snow while making use of white space? Check out this snow coloring tutorial! But fair warning, in this tutorial, I also had an acrylic explode while recording.

I will show how to lean into the recovery when art tools give hurdles today. In my experience, these little hiccups can add some really cool things to the page. You will also notice my gel pen, and I was at odds, but I leaned into it.

Snow Coloring Tutorial

I am super excited about this tutorial as it continues my discussion of white space and how to lean into it. Some days, it is hard to find time to color, and I hope that this tutorial series helps show some quick ways to still enjoy the hobby.

Fast confession, I almost started this tutorial over, but I thought it would be a good example to show that a page isn't ruined with mistakes. It can be recovered.

Today's tutorial involves three takeaways:
1) Another quick way to use white space in a scene
2) How the sky plays a role in shadows on the page
3) Leaning into an acrylic accident

Tools Used

In this tutorial, I used 2 alcohol markers (Honolulu B - Old codes), a Pandafly blue charcoal, an Artistro medium tip white acrylic, and a Sakura White Gel Pen.

Snow Coloring Tutorial Video

This video is under a minute with just a few steps!

Snow Coloring Tutorial Step-By-Step

Step 1: Take a white gel pen to create snow mounds and define the horizon.
Step 2: Use Mg030 to color the sky.
Step 3: Use MG030 to define shadows on the snow mounds and stipple a little detail.
Step 4: Use BG050 to stipple a little detail along the shadows.
Step 5: Take the blue charcoal and color above along the shadows and along some of the white space. Blend in to the desired effect.
Step 6: Using a white acrylic (or gel pen), dot snowflakes into the sky and along the horizon and over some of the blue charcoal and shadows.
Step 7: Use a gel pen (even if it is fighting to be functional) and dot along the sky snow flurries.

Acrylic And Gel Pen Mishaps

I know it can be really stressful when an item doesn't perform as desired for coloring. As you saw in the snow coloring tutorial video, my acrylic globbed on the page.

I just leaned into using it as a source to dot around the rest of the page until it dried. It still created the effect I wanted, and if I needed to, I could have gone over the top with alcohol markers from the scene colors or used other acrylics to help it blend more.

I had a request come in that I think works well with today's tutorial, so I will be covering that for tomorrow!
